New to the Shop: Imperial Stock Ranch yarns and fibers

At Abundant Yarn & Dyeworks, we believe in supporting and promoting local dyers, artists, designers and fiber producers.  When we first saw Imperial Stock Ranch yarns, we were excited by the fibers.  But when we heard the story of the ranch, we knew we had to become part of what they are doing out there in Shaniko.  We recently had the honor of bringing our staff to the Imperial Stock Ranch on their shearing day to see and be part of their operation; you can read an account of that emotional day in our latest newsletter.

The Imperial Stock Ranch is a family owned and operated ranch located on more than 30,000 acres of Oregon's beautiful High Desert. Founded by Richard Hinton in 1871, the ranch has been raising Columbia sheep, a breed known for quality meat as well as quality fiber, since its inception. Today the Imperial Stock Ranch is owned by Dan and Jeanne Carver, who believe in "mindful land stewardship" and apply low input farming practices.   It is a Certified Conservation Farm and has partnered with many environmental and government agencies in its conservation efforts. The Imperial Stock Ranch has received numerous awards for excellence in stewardship and land management practices. We are pleased to have been selected Honorable Mention for the 2004 National Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture and to have been asked to speak at the 20th anniversary convention of SARE.
Harvested each year from Columbia sheep, a breed originating on the Imperial Stock Ranch, this wool is unique in every aspect. Our sheep do not receive any injections and are fed exclusively on our chemical free rangeland.  We produce and direct market beautifully colored Columbia wool products through sustainable, environmentally conscious farming and processing practices. The yarns are custom milled without harsh chemical or extreme temperatures, leaving it comfortable, soft, and pure. This outstanding wool is a true legacy of the American West.  The yarn is then sold or turned into beautiful fabrics and garments by local artisans.  We do not use off shore labor or production.
By 1999, consolidation in traditional markets, imported products, and outsourced production put an incredible amount of pressure on the sheep industry in America, resulting in 26,000 U.S. sheep producers quitting the business in a four year period.  Motivated by the commitment to sustainable agricultural production, and the need to be economically sustainable, we plunged into the challenges of creating solutions for local sheep growers and fiber artisans.  Imperial Stock Ranch creates and sells yarns and a line of apparel.  All garments are designed and produced by Central Oregon artisans.  Rather than selling wool in the commodities market and into overseas production, the wool is locally turned into a beautiful wool yarn for hand crafters or into a unique, hand-crafted, quality natural fiber apparel piece.

Sustainability encompasses economic viability, environmental and social responsibility and preservation of culture.  It is the integration of human well being with the natural world.

Jeanne Carver will be speaking at Abundant Yarn on May 15 at 6:30 pm.  Admission is free however you may want to reserve your seat online or by calling the shop!

A New Kind Of Sunday "School"

What started out as a knitalong has gently morphed into a close group of Sunday morning brunchers. Our friend Diana tells her family and friends that she's going to "Sunday School" to explain her near-religious devotion for attending! As always, it's a potluck so feel free to bring a dish - Anything is welcome, as long as it's tasty!
